Bootstrapping Your Business into a Growth Machine

Building a business from scratch can be one of the most rewarding—and demanding—journeys an entrepreneur can take. In this session, “Bootstrapping Your Business into a Growth Machine,” we’ll explore how founders can turn limited resources into long-term success, using strategy, grit, and smart systems to grow without relying on external funding.

Our speaker for this event, Nobesuthu Ndlovu, is a powerhouse entrepreneur and executive who built her retail brand, Burgundy Fly, from the ground up—creating over 120 jobs along the way. With over a decade of hands-on entrepreneurial experience, she understands what it truly takes to scale a business in resource-constrained environments.

Now serving as Director SME at Old Mutual, Nobesuthu continues to shape the future of African entrepreneurship by championing tech-enabled solutions, expanding access to capital, and building platforms like SMEgo, which supports over 16,000 SMEs. She brings a rare mix of entrepreneurial hustle and corporate insight—making her the perfect voice for founders looking to scale sustainably.

During this session, Nobesuthu will share valuable insights on how to:

  • Leverage your limited resources to maximize growth
  • Build sustainable systems for long-term success
  • Overcome challenges unique to bootstrapped businesses
  • Use strategic partnerships and alternative distribution channels to scale

The Startup Huddle event provides a platform for entrepreneurs to discover solutions to the challenges they face through purposeful engagement with a broad array of voices from the local community, who can also share their experiences.

Startups are given context about the topic at hand, which includes tools, tricks and techniques from experts. This can take up to 10min. Thereafter, they will be given 2-3 minutes to tell us about some of the challenges they have encountered in their business venture. Participants then get into small groups where they Huddle for a 10-minute -interactive activity. Each group selects a team member or two to share what they discussed. The Huddle will close off having equipped the techies with practical and value-add experience they can use in their startup journey.
