When the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) convened in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2017, it set the stage for a transformative journey. Six years later, we celebrated the inaugural GEC+Africa in Cape Town on March 13-14, 2024. This milestone event was inspired by the then-Deputy President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, who, in his keynote address at the 2017 GEC, challenged us to create a legacy and foster regional collaboration within Africa’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

In response to this challenge, significant strides have been made. Following the GEC 2017, which drew nearly 8,000 delegates from 180 countries, we launched the 22 On Sloane startup campus, Africa’s largest. Since its inception in 2018, 22 On Sloane has supported over 1,000 startups and SMMEs, generating over 2,000 jobs and nearly R500 million (USD 25 million) in revenue. The GEC+Africa, held in collaboration with various stakeholders and led by the Department of Small Business Development and African Bank, attracted over 2,000 delegates from 71 countries, contributing an estimated R25 million to South Africa’s economy.

At the GEC+Africa 2024, Deputy President of South Africa, Paul Mashatile, underscored the vital role of entrepreneurs in the economy, dubbing them the bedrock of any successful nation. The event’s success and impact are a testament to the collaborative efforts of all involved, including GEN Africa and 22 On Sloane.

The GEC+Africa 2024 report is an essential resource for understanding the current landscape and future potential of entrepreneurship in Africa. It highlights the challenges and opportunities within the SMME sector, offering a roadmap for stakeholders to drive sustainable growth and innovation. The report’s insights are crucial for policymakers, entrepreneurs, investors, and other key players committed to fostering a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem in Africa.

Our collective efforts have made GEC+Africa 2024 a phenomenal success, leaving an indelible mark on Africa’s economic landscape. We are immensely grateful to our partners, colleagues, participants, and stakeholders for their unwavering dedication.

As we move forward, let us build on the lessons learned and connections made during the congress. Let us champion entrepreneurship, advocate for supportive policies, and collaborate to create an innovative, inclusive, and sustainable future for all.
